Fusidic acid is a new antibiotic that is especially effective against gram-positive micro-organisms. It is used in medicine, in the form of creams and ophthalmic gel, to treat severe skin and eye infections.
Apart from a number of Danish pharmaceutical companies, Ercros is the only manufacturer of fusidic acid in Western Europe. In the rest of the world, there is only one other producer, in Russia. In association with the Canadian pharmaceutical company that helped develop it, Ercros also holds exclusive marketing rights for this product in Canada, Norway and the European Union.
By 2002, the product had been launched in 19 countries. Ercros has also taken the first steps to open up markets for this product in a dozen Asian and Latin American countries.
Ercros also produces sodium fusidate, a salt derived from fusidic acid with the same pharmacological properties as the acid, but with specific characteristics that allow it to be used in other forms, such as tablets and ointments.
