| Description and properties |
Dichloroethane (chemical name 1,2 dichloroethane) is a flammable, colourless liquid obtained by adding chlorine to ethylene. Its boiling point is 83.5º C and its density is 1.24 g/m3, making it denser than water. |
| Applications |
Its main application is the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), which is used to obtain polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is also used as an intermediate product of chlorinated solvents, in paint, varnish and finish removers, in metal degreasers, and as intermediate product in organic synthesis.
