The Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) plant was the first chloromethane plant (methyl chloride, methylene chloride and chloroform) in Spain. This first move into the petrochemical business enabled Spain to stop importing this product and even start to export it on a regular basis, something that continues to this day, on the back of very flexible facilities with initial capacity having doubled to its current combined level of 27,000 tons per annum.
The Flix plant also produces methylene chloride, with one third of production exported to EU countries, and carbon tetrachloride, an excellent grease solvent. This product is used for key uses that fall within the scope of Section 1 of Article 5 of the Montreal Protocol. Ercros exports 95% of its carbon tetrachloride production.
