Chlorine, which is manufactured by Ercros at its Flix, Palos de la Frontera, Sabiñánigo and Vila-seca facilities, is the most common chemical product in everyday human activity. Modern life, with all its benefits, would not be possible without the aid of chlorine and without its contribution to the manufacture of a wide range of products in day-to-day use such as vitamins, pesticides, plastics, building materials, etc.
It is so basic that it is used in 80% of medicines. Moreover, it is the most effective disinfectant of drinking water, helping to prevent the development of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
Most of the Company’s chlorine production, which amounts to a total of 470,000 tons per annum, is used internally as feedstock in the manufacture of chlorine derivatives. The remaining product is sold to third parties for use in chemical synthesis.
Since 1992, a third of the chlorine produced in Vila-seca is obtained using the membrane cell process, the most technologically advanced process and the most appropriate for new facilities.
