ErcrosBio, the bioplastic bio2

Ercros has developed a new line of bioplastics, which will be marketed under the ErcrosBio® brand.

ErcrosBio® is truly a "biological" bioplastic: the source is "bio" and the end product is also "bio".

It is based on PLA (polylactic acid) and PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates polymers and copolymers family) and is made from renewable vegetable raw materials (biobased), such as the sugar cane.

Because of its properties: it is biodegradable, it decomposes naturally without leaving waste in the environment; it is biocompostable, degrading biologically to compost in six weeks, generating carbon dioxide, water, minerals and fertiliser; and it is recyclable.

Thanks to these characteristics, ErcrosBio® is the ideal material for manufacturing different types of single-use containers for food, cosmetic etc., as well as for the manufacturing of durable goods for the electronic and automotive sectors.

Its plastic properties grant the technical potential to replace many of the plastics currently in use, providing sustainability and a low carbon footprint (between 3 and 10 times less CO2 emissions per kg of polymer than the most common plastics according to Plastics Europe).

According to the European Bioplasticscurrent production of this type of polymer will increase five times in 2016.

Do you know...?

The agricultural area currently used for the production of bioplastics barely reaches 0,01% of the global agriculture land. The production of bio-based materials, including wood and cellulose, occupies 2% while biofuels do 1%. The remaining 97% is divided among crops intended for human and animal consumption, which now occupy only 26% of global agricultural land, and pastures, which account for 71% of the surface. The exploitation of crops for bioplastics is not a threat to food and feed. The forecast for 2019 is that the area of crops for bioplastics will increase to 0,03%.
