Barcelona, December 28, 2018. - A group of experts in the study of soils visited last November 21 the land of the Terrera Nova in Cardona, property of Ercros. The visit forms part of the 43rd Scientific Conference on the degradation and restoration of natural, agricultural and urban soils in arid and semi-arid climates, organized by the University of Barcelona in collaboration with the Centre for Technological Research and Forestry Applications (“CREAF”) and by the Francophone Group on Humidimetry and Transport in porous media (“GFHN”).
Montserrat Jorba, associate professor at the University of Barcelona and collaborator in the restoration of the Terrera Nova in Cardona, led the visit of the experts and showed them the tasks carried out and the work planned in the restoration project carried out by Ercros. The scientists - biologists, geologists, edaphologists and hydrologists - were able to verify the evolution of the salinity of the land, the tests carried out and the growth of the vegetation that has been planted.
The Terrera Nova in Cardona was formed by the waste deposition from the extraction of potash, from the mines in the area until the 70s. From 1991 to 2012, Ercros exploited the salt that contained such waste until its disposal. At present, Ercros is carrying out the restoration of the soil that has been freed by the disappearance of the dump with the revegetation of the area.
